Cardiovascular diseases are the most common cause of death in New Zealand. Many cardiovascular diseases can be treated or cured, if diagnosed in time. The Cardiovascular system modelling group at the DCRC focuses on developing and improving diagnosis methods for cardiovascular diseases.
This research group has been initiated by a request from industry to model pulse wave propagation in the arteries, to identify stiffness changes in the arterial walls. With our experience with modelling biological tissues and acoustic wave propagation, the DCRC has started to develop models which can be used in real time in diagnostic devices. The Centre will increase the size of this group, with several PhD students working on detailed analysis of arterial properties, wave propagation effects and others.
